This blog will teach you how to make butter along with different flavor butters you can make. 1 quart of heavy cream typically makes around 16 oz of butter and around 2 cups of buttermilk.

What you need:

  • kitchen aid with whisk attachment
  • Kitchen towel
  • Heavy cream
  • 2 Bowls
  • Fine strainer
  • Glass jar
  • Cold water
  • Cheese cloth (optional)
  • Salt or other flavor add ins
  • Butter Molds, butter bell, storage container, or wax paper

How to make butter:

  • Add heavy cream to kitchen aid and cover opening with towel
  • Mix on highest setting for about 25-35 minutes or until cream has turned into a solid (butter) and a liquid (buttermilk)
  • Place all the butter into a glass bowl
  • Strain the buttermilk into the jar and add the remaining butter from top of strainer to bowl with butter in it
  • If you choose to, put butter in cheese cloth (I prefer to just use my hands for this step)
  • Rinse butter under cold water, squeezing out the liquid until it runs clear and all the buttermilk is out of the butter
  • Add clean butter to clean bowl and add in flavors of choice
  • Mix butter and add finished product into butter mold, storage container, or rolled in wax paper
  • Fresh butter is good in the fridge for 3-5 days. If you choose to, you can wrap it in wax paper and place it in the freezer for longer.

Garlic Herb Butter:

Add 2 cloves finely minced garlic, 1 tsp Rosemary finely chopped, 1 tsp thyme finely chopped, 2 tbsp parsley finely chopped(I like to use my food processor to get a fine chop on the garlic and herbs), and salt to about 16 oz of butter

  • Good for dinner and seasoning chicken, steak, fish, and vegetables

Cilantro Lime Butter:

Kids can also make their own butter by adding heavy cream to an airtight container or glass mason jar (the more cream you add the longer the process will take). Have your child shake the container until it separates out into butter and buttermilk and then let them rinse their butter and add whatever flavor they would like.

Good for all ages that can securely hold a jar and shake it (pictured below is 2 and 5 yo)

Whipped Cream Recipe:

If you chose to make whipped cream instead of butter follow this simple recipe.

  • Add 1 cup heavy cream, 2 tablespoons powdered sugar (regular sugar will work but won’t be as smooth), and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Mix in kitchen aid and mix until soft peaks start to form.

* Can fold in almond or hazelnut extract, cocoa powder, citrus zest, or fruit puree once whipped cream is made

What to do with buttermilk:

Do not throw the liquid out that is left over after making butter. This is buttermilk and there are many things you can make with it!
